HOWDY. It’s another example of how social media companies struggle to police elections. The United States president and Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, signed a political agreement, in principle, on U.S.-European Union data transfers back in March. China is quickly extending its own rules to whoever will listen. One of the major supporters of the most recent attempt at federal privacy standards told me he hoped for a potential breakthrough during the so-called lame-duck session after the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. But relying on another jurisdiction — whose courts have repeatedly ruled U.S. surveillance practices are unlawful — to give your citizens improved protections is never a good look. But given the lack of leadership from Washington, it’s the only regime the West has. THE ANATOMY OF A (FAILED) FOREIGN INTERFERENCE CAMPAIGN
